TRAILERS
Originaly named 'Trailers' as they were shown at the end of a movie, however most people tended to leave the cinema after the movie had ended, so the trailer wasn't viewed as often as producers would like, and so Trailers were moved to before the start of movies, but the name 'Trailer' carried along with them.
The main purpose of a Trailer in terms of marketing a movie is clearly to attract an audience to the film. By showing the most inticing clips of the movie in quick cuts, often leaving a question un-answered making the viewer want to watch or purchase the movie. Trailers are shown before movies in Cinemas and also on DVD's before the main feature starts, on the Internet and even on Mobile Phones.
FILM MAGAZINE FRONT COVERS
Advertising on a Film Magazine Front cover, similar to a Trailer is aimed to attract an audience for the movie.
However, advertising on a magazine cover, unlike a trailer will reach a wider audience, people who do not go the cinema or have the internet (The older generation generally) but may be interested in viewing the movie being advertised will more likely be informed of the movies release through the front of a magazine in a shop.
POSTERS
Again, these are produced to attract an audience to the movie. Posters can be placed all over, shop windows, bill boards, bus stops, phone boxes, anywhere the producer wishes his movie to be advertised, it can be done. Such posters often attract a significant audience to a movie. Often sharing synergy with the Movie Trailer, the posters are a reminder to potential audience members that this move is here and 'OUT NOW', never letting audince members get away from the fact that the movie is only in cinemas now for a short amount of time, an omnipotent reminder, essentially movie propaganda.
