Analysis Of Two Movie Magazine Front Covers :

The above image is the front cover for the magazine "Total Film". Total film has enhanced its entire house style in order to match the themes and conventions of the headline movie "Inception", this is strange as Total Film is a highly regarded, established industry and this seems to suggest that the movie is bigger and more important than the magazine. The main star Leanardo is obstructing the Total Film mast head, again suggesting the importance of the movie. The colour scheme also matches the advertised movie, mainly dark colours, but white for text to make it more noticable, the cover has a cold, blue tint feel. Upon emphasising the importance of Inception, the magazine does not fail to include it's other articles on the cover, obstructing the image of Leanardo in fact to display an index of other articles. The language used is mainly non formal as it uses many puns and modern day phrases to address the audience, whilst still maintaining some sense of formallity with the columns containing text.
In contrast with Total Film, Empire magazine shows the main star Danielle pictured behind the masthead, in the background, again, strangely suggesting that the magazine is more important than the movie. Similarly the cover uses a blue/cold style tint in order to match the conventions of the headline movie. The Magazine does not need to display the headline movie in bold, large font like in Total Film as Harry Potter is such as an established franchise that just the image of the main star is enough, people instantly recognise it is Harry Potter. In contrast to Total Film also, this cover displays two images of inside articles, although the colour of it's text is similar and they both display a column style format in which they display an index.

I believe that the Total Film front cover is more effective as the adaptaion of the movie house style combination makes it much more eye catching.
